Start with the amount that must arrive

When supporting family or friends across borders, the most useful comparison is not only the fee shown at the start. Ask how much the recipient will actually receive, in their local currency, after fees and exchange-rate conversion.

Two services can advertise similar transfer fees but deliver different final amounts. Compare the complete quote immediately before confirming a transaction, because exchange rates and availability can change.

  • Transfer fee
  • Exchange rate used
  • Receiving or withdrawal charges
  • Taxes or local charges where applicable
  • Exact amount the recipient is expected to receive

Match the delivery method to the recipient

A bank deposit may suit one person, while another relies on mobile money or cash collection. Before sending, confirm that the recipient can access the selected method and that the name and account details match their identification.

Consider travel time, opening hours, connectivity and any cost involved in reaching a collection point. A slightly cheaper transfer may not be better if it creates significant inconvenience or delay.

Check speed—and what the estimate means

Estimated delivery times are not guarantees. Weekends, public holidays, compliance checks, incorrect details and receiving-provider availability can affect timing.

If money is needed for a time-sensitive purpose, send early when possible. Keep the receipt and transaction reference, and use only the provider’s official support channel if a transfer appears delayed.

Protect every transaction

Never send money because someone pressures you to act immediately or asks you to keep the payment secret. Confirm unexpected requests through a separate, trusted contact method. Do not share passwords, PINs or one-time security codes.

Review recipient details carefully before confirming. Once funds have been paid out, recovery may be difficult or impossible.

  • Pause when a request creates urgency or fear
  • Verify the person and purpose independently
  • Use official apps and websites
  • Keep confirmation records
  • Report suspicious activity quickly

Make the decision together

Cross-border support works best when sender and recipient agree on the amount, timing and delivery method. A short conversation before sending can prevent errors and make the transfer more useful.
